Musical instruments and sound toys
First instruments and sound toys: metallophones, keyboards, guitars, karaoke sets, hand crank music boxes and sound puzzles. Classic World and Mideer make up most of the wooden instruments, with electronic sets alongside them.
There is one honest warning attached to this section. Every toy in it makes a noise, and the noise is the entire point. Choosing between the wooden and the electronic end is mostly choosing how much of it you want to hear.
Brands in this category: Mideer, Classic World, B-Toys, Onshine and Toy Story.

How to choose
A first instrument should make a pleasant sound when it is played badly, which rules out more of the market than you would expect. A metallophone or a xylophone is tuned, so a toddler hitting it at random still produces something musical rather than noise.
Hand crank music boxes are the quiet option and often the one a parent keeps afterwards. Karaoke sets and electric guitars are loud by design, so buy them for a house where that is fine and check whether the volume can be limited. Nothing here needs a child to read music.
